Super Mario: an animated film in sight?

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo's moustached mascot could be adapted into an animated film.

According to the WSJ, Universal's subsidiary, Illumination, to whom we owe already Moi, Moche and méchant as well as Les Minions would have entered into negotiations with Nintendo for the exploitation in a big production of the franchise Mario Bros.

The old Nintendo moustachio plumber could see his adventures on the big screen in an animated film, then in several if the first meets the success in the cinema.

Most fans will remember a fairly catastrophic movie adaptation of Super Mario in 1993 with Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper. The new film should, hopefully, play on a completely different register.

The film is a logical continuation of the partnership between Nintendo and Universal last year around the creation of a Super Mario World amusement park in Japan. In addition, Nintendo has reverted to its economic strategy that relies solely on pure video games to diversify and reach a wider audience, including through goodies or license operations.
