Windows: urgent update of patch deactivation for Spectrum

Rare, an emergency update released this weekend for Windows disables a security patch.

As part of an off-cycle update, Microsoft has released an update for Windows since the weekend that disables mitigation for CVE-2017-5715, aka variant 2 of Spectrum.
This is an implementation of the Intel recommendation that decided to suspend the broadcast deployment of a patch for Spectrum because of side effects such as untimely reboots, or even the loss or corruption of data.

The update KB4078130 is for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and all versions of Windows 10, whether client or server. If applicable, for affected devices, the update can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Microsoft also releases instructions to manually disable the problematic patch through registry keys on the workstation and on the server.

Variant 2 of Spectrum relates to a hardware flaw of the branch prediction. It affects processors with the speculative execution feature. For the case of the flaw itself, malicious processes can access data from other programs in virtual memory.

The modification to block the side effects is done without a BIOS update. In addition, the measures against variant 1 of Spectrum as well as variant 3 of Meltdown remain in place.

A patch in good standing should not be too late. Last week, Intel said it is being tested. This time, it will avoid surprises. In addition to Microsoft, the backpedaling with the patch for variant 2 of Spectrum also concerns HP and Dell (with BIOS updates), as well as Red Hat for example.

Note that Microsoft has temporarily paused patching due to issues with devices with AMD processors.
