iPhone X: Face ID hack with a mask

A hack worthy of the "Impossible Mission" series for security researchers from Bkav who claim to have beaten Face ID with the making of a mask.
Just a proof of concept for the moment.

In 2013, the Chaos Computer Club hacker organization (CCC) bypassed the digital recognition lockout of Apple's iPhone 5S, relying on a residual print scanned at 2400 dpi and manufacturing a latex copy. of the fingerprint.

For hackers around the world, a new challenge after Touch ID is obviously Face ID of iPhone X. The transition from authentication using fingerprint authentication to using facial recognition, to Apple sauce.

Face ID is based on hardware and software. Apple says a TrueDepth camera captures facial data by projecting and analyzing more than 30,000 points in infrared. In the secure enclave, a component of the A11 Bionic chip transforms the infrared image and a depth map into a mathematical representation that will be compared to the recorded facial data.

Not unlike the CCC's method on some aspects, the Vietnamese security company Bkav claims to have cheated Face ID with a mask. There is no question of a failure of the secure enclave.

What is called proof of concept is the creation of a mask to reconstruct the face of a legitimate user. Bkav indicates the use of a scanner and a 3D printer, a silicone nose made by hand by an artist, 2D printing for other parts of the face. The skin has been handcrafted to "fool Apple's artificial intelligence."

"We understand how the Face ID AI works and how to get around it." According to Bkav researchers, the price of the mask for their "mission impossible" hack comes down to around $ 150. They apparently would have identified the sensitive points of the geometry of a face to focus on.

For Bkav, the potential targets with such a hack are not ordinary users but billionaires, managers of large companies or heads of state.

During the presentation of the iPhone X, Apple said that Face ID technology was designed not to be fooled by photos or masks. In particular, work with specialists and artists from the Hollywood industry was highlighted.
