McAfee closes access to its source code for foreign governments

McAfee source code inspection by foreign governments ended this year.
A decision mediated while Kaspersky Lab has just done the opposite.

McAfee, a US-based cybersecurity company, no longer allows foreign governments to take a look at the source code of its products. A framed opening that aimed to ensure the non-presence of hidden backdoors.

Recently reported by Reuters, the decision was made by McAfee earlier this year, when finalizing the sale of Intel's stake in an investment fund. It seems to respond to a mistrust of the examination of the code by specialized Russian companies.

Reuters recalls the opinions of experts and former US officials that such a review would provide Russia with "opportunities to find vulnerabilities" that could later be exploited in cyberattacks.

What to look out for when Kaspersky Lab has just announced the opening of transparency centers and a review of the source code of its products by a trusted third party. For the Russian publisher of security solutions, it is about restoring confidence after US accusations of collusion with the Kremlin.

Symantec had already made a similar decision to McAfee. Source code inspection or not? The decision does not seem to be so easy to make.
