2012 TC4: the asteroid will go to 44000 km of the Earth

A small asteroid will come to make us cuckoo on October 12 at an altitude not so far from that of geostationary satellites.

A satellite in geostationary orbit is operating at an altitude of about 36,000 km. On October 12th, the asteroid 2012 TC4 will pass by us at 44,000 km. The European Space Agency (ESA) says it is a "small" asteroid.

Discovered in October 2012 and still relatively mysterious, 2012 TC4 was observed at the end of July and early August using a telescope with a mirror of 8.2 meters diameter of the Southern European Observatory in Chile. For five years he had not been observed.

It was thus possible to remove an uncertainty and to calculate the asteroid's trajectory, whereas the estimates based on the data during its discovery in 2012 were based on a distance between 6 800 km and 274 000 km of us .

2012 TC4 measures between 15 and 30 meters. If so, the ESA writes that its entry into our atmosphere would have had a "similar effect" to the Chelyabinsk meteor which had caused material damage in Russia in 2013:

Moving 44,000 km above our heads, 2012 TC4 should reveal more information about it and its composition.

The 2012 TC4 observing campaign is part of an international initiative led by NASA to gauge our ability to detect, track and respond to potential heavenly threats.
