Facebook Portal: an assistant to Google Home to extend the social network


Facebook should in turn offer a domestic assistant similar to Amazon Echo or Google Home.

The trend is for smart digital assistants to enter the rooms of the house and several large groups have already launched their solution. This new way of reaching the public right at home apparently also interests Facebook, which is preparing its own device.

According to Cheddar.com, the gadget, designed within the hardware R & D lab Building 8, would be called Portal and would be similar to the Amazon Echo Show with its color screen and ability to make video calls. But where other companies tout the merits of a versatile assistant, Facebook would logically position his device as an extension of the social network and a new way to communicate with loved ones.

 The Portal would also be voice-controlled and it would have a photo sensor with wide-angle optics and facial recognition to link the corresponding Facebook accounts.

It would allow video calls with family and friends and manage various aspects of the social network. It would also be possible to access third party services like Spotify or Netflix.

Facebook will unveil its Portal system next May, at its major annual developer conference, with a planned commercialization in the second half of 2018. The price would be of the order of 499 dollars but it could evolve downward. here his official announcement.
