Android: applications will have 64-bit compatibility by August 2019

Google has announced that applications to Android will necessarily be compatible 64-bit from August 2019.

Since Android Lollipop 2015, Google's mobile OS supports 64-bit applications. Nevertheless, there was no obligation to force developers to offer compatible applications, a situation that will change in the summer of 2019.

The applications of the Play Store will necessarily have to embrace the 64-bit (they can also support the 32 bit). Google is already pointing out that by then some devices might only be compatible with 64-bit applications, making the move towards this standard particularly important for developers who want to keep reaching as many users as possible.

The rocker will be in several stages. By August 2018, new applications (not updates) will have to go through the programming interfaces of Android Oreo allowing them to exploit the new features of the OS. Application updates will also have to comply with this rule starting in November.

Improved security is also planned for early 2018 which should allow Google to be more serious about the absence of threats in its Play Store apps.

The arrival of 64-bit processors in the mobile world has enabled terminals to achieve a significant leap in performance. The 64 Bit allows to manage more than 4 GB of RAM (up to 1 terabyte max for 40 bits allocated processors). This makes it possible to manage greedy applications, to better manage multitasking. Interesting 64-bit point in the mobile world and current trends: the ability to take advantage of higher computing capabilities exploited in the field of encryption or artificial intelligence or even video games and ultra HD.

Note that this switch to 64-bit processors, Apple has already initiated in recent years. Since February 2015, all applications in the App Store must be coded in 64 bits and since last September, iOS 11 has permanently abandoned the 32-bit applications.
