Google News zaps sites that hide their home country

Google explains the rules for its Google News service to show its efforts in the fight against misinformation.

In the fight against fake news, Google has updated and explained the general instructions in relation to the index of its news aggregation service. Notably, Google News - or Google News - will hunt for sites that conceal their country of origin or intentionally mislead readers.

We can read that the sites included in Google News "must not give a false image of their owner or their main purpose, nor make false declaration or hide information about them."

Google further clarifies that this includes sites that "declare an inaccurate country of origin or that conceal it, and that address users located in another country on deceptive grounds."

Such tactics can be used for disseminating misinformation. For Google, it is a question of transparency vis-à-vis users on the origin of the news online.
