GDDR6: Samsung Announces First 16 Gb DRAM

The dedicated memory GDDR6 should in principle be launched from 2018, after the current GDRR5X. Samsung begins to evoke a first component.

The GDDR6 memory used by graphics cards is due to land early in 2018 and several semiconductor manufacturers are expected to launch their first memory components fairly quickly.

While SK Hynix has already set the stage, it is Samsung that says (a bit) more about its projects by evoking a GDDR6 module of 16 Gb capable of ensuring a bitrate up to 16 Gbps (against 8 Gbps for the GDDR5) and at a voltage of 1.35 V (instead of 1.5 volt for the GDDR5 memory).

What to be able to cope with the pressure of memory HBM (High Bandwith Memory) chosen by some actors of the graphics cards. It is on the side of Nvidia's Volta GPUs that the first applications of GDDR6 memories should be found in the first half of 2018, while some AMD Vega offers could benefit from HBM2 instead, especially at the beginning of the range.

It also remains to be seen whether Intel, which now has claims on discrete graphics cards with the recruitment of Raja Koduri, left of AMD, will also turn to the memory GDDR6.
