Pixel 2 embeds the first chip designed by Google

It went totally unnoticed at the Google conference to present the new smartphones Pixel 2, yet the terminals embed the first chip designed by the giant Net.

It is called Pixel Visual Core, it is the first chip designed by Google, and it is already embedded, but for now left inactive within Pixel 2 smartphones.

It will be on the occasion of the release of Android Oreo 8.1 that the chip of Google will finally activated to propose features mainly focused on image processing.

Google said in a note that the Pixel Visual Core will support the Pixel 2 in the management of the HDR +, a feature that allows to take the best of several shots taken simultaneously with several different settings to propose a merged image displaying the best quality possible in illuminated areas such as dark areas.

This image processing requires significant power, hitherto drawn from the main processor of the terminal while implying a rather heavy consumption which impacts the autonomy of smartphones. The Pixel Visual Core and its 8 cores are dedicated solely to image processing, so it is more efficient in this practice and should offer better rendering, faster and with less impact on the overall performance of the smartphone than on autonomy. Google reports a speed of processing in HDR + up to 5 times faster than its previous models for a consumption of only 1 / 10th.

Google announced that an API would be offered to developers to take advantage of this chip in their next applications.

This incursion into the world of chips goes hand in hand with Google's stated willingness to regain control of the hardware part of its platforms, notably with the partial takeover of HTC. Google could thus, within a few years, position itself on the same ground as Apple by mastering both hardware and software to offer ultra-optimized terminals ... It remains to know what will be the third manufacturers in this case, we remember what the acquisition of Nokia by Microsoft and the disappearance of Windows Mobile will have given. This strategy could also push Samsung to reorient itself more quickly to its own OS: Tizen.
