Google launches "advanced protection" for Gmail accounts



Google has just launched an advanced protection feature for users who want to secure their Gmail account more.


Google recently announced the launch of an "advanced protection" program for its user accounts. The program is aimed primarily at users considered at risk: journalists, business leaders, activists, election campaign teams ...

To take advantage of this advanced protection, it will first be necessary to recover two physical security keys: one main, and one backup. As for the first, Google recommends Feitian Multipass FIDO that works on both PC (USB), phone and tablet (in Bluetooth). For the second, Google recommends Yubico FIDO U2F only running on PC (USB).


  
This choice of switching to physical keys is explained by the fact that traditional double-factor authentication using SMS or Google Authenticator does not represent optimum security in some special cases. SMS interception and remote smartphone piracy are a reality, as the risk is non-existent for physical keys.

With advanced protection enabled, the user will automatically be disconnected from all third-party applications that can access Google services through shared APIs within the group. This implies a loss of comfort for the user: it will be necessary to go through Chrome to access the services of Google, opt for a smartphone Android  ...
