iPhone: the Touch ID completely abandoned for the Face ID in 2018

The days of the Touch ID fingerprint reader would be counted on the iPhone, the 2018 models would all have to face Face Face recognition.

After several years of integrating a Touch ID fingerprint reader, the iPhone X plays face recognition facial recognition, failing to be able to integrate a fingerprint reader under the screen.

And it could now be that the Touch ID completely disappears from the iPhone next year, leaving only the Face ID as the main method of authentication.

This is once again Ming-Chi Kuo, the analyst of KGI Securities, which says in a note to its customers. He had already pointed out that the Face ID had a good chance to spread to the entire iPhone range in 2018 if the iPhone X was a success this year.

In this new note, he suggests that the 3D sensor allowing facial recognition is becoming a differentiating feature and that Apple could take advantage of its advance in the matter by offering it on all its smartphones and abandoning the Touch ID.

A fingerprint reader housed under the screen could be offered on some  Chinese smartphones next year but the cost of this technology should limit its spread and manufacturers of Android smartphones would already turn to 3D sensor solutions.

At the same time, the analyst suggests that Apple is still working on its own technology and therefore no doubt despairs of being able to offer it one day. However, he indicated a few days ago that the Face ID service could end up in the iPad Pro, suggesting there too the rapid abandonment of the Touch ID.
