As for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, Apple could choose to bridle the Qualcomm modems to bring them back to the level of performance of those of Intel, its recent supplier.

With the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, Apple has appealed for the first time to Intel for the supply of 4G modems, after several years of exclusive contracts with Qualcomm, creating different versions according to the markets.

To ensure a uniform user experience between the two variants, the Cupertino firm has chosen to limit the performance of the Qualcomm modem to the level of those of the Intel modems whose first solutions have not yet the same Level of quality.

These choices have led to a tense situation between Apple and Qualcomm, the latter regretting that its state-of-the-art modems can not express all their capabilities and without being able to communicate freely on this point.

According to Bloomberg, the same situation could happen again for the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 7S / 7S Plus launched at the end of the year. Qualcomm's modems should be able to reach 1 Gbps (theoretically) but they could be flanged and offer less capacity, Intel not yet having similar solutions (they are announced but will not be ready for the release of the next iPhone) .

At the same time, Apple has never been in a hurry to offer the most advanced modem capabilities, unlike Samsung whose Galaxy S8 and S8 + are already compatible with the 4G Gbps.

Finding an operator offering it is more complicated but this evolution is in their roadmap in two to three years. It is also perhaps the reason why Apple allows this compromise of performance balancing, although this is necessarily frustrating for
iPhone 7S, at the forefront of technical evolutions in cellular networks.
