Apple seems to want to regain control of the production of the chips that animate all of its mobile devices.
After the ARM chips for its Macbooks, the Bluetooth chips for its
accessories or even its GPU, Apple would be developing a new chip
entirely dedicated to artificial intelligence.
Apple would like to take the hand in the sector that currently escapes. While the Cupertino firm was one of the first to launch a voice assistant (Siri) with a form of artificial intelligence, the technology developed a few years ago is losing ground against a competition that invests heavily in the sector.
We have seen the arrival of dedicated and intelligent assistants at Amazon with Alexa, Google with Google Assistant, but also in Windows 10 PCs with Cortana. Faced with these modules, Siri does not seem as innovative as before, or even a little bit on the go, and Apple wants to reverse the trend.
According to Bloomberg, Apple would therefore develop a processor that would be entirely dedicated to AI-related calculations, in order to offer better, faster, more accurate speech and facial recognition and better meet user expectations. Having a chip specialized in this area would unload the main processor of the iPhone or iPad.
Still according to Bloomberg, Apple has already planned to open its chip, named Apple Neural Engine to third-party developers to exploit the power to serve their applications. Apple could formalize its project during the WWDC to be held from June 5 to 9.
