In Norway, a vehicle sold on two is electric or hybrid

Norway has started the transition of its car fleet: from now on, one out of every two new cars in the country is hybrid or electric.

Norway is a good student for the renewal of its car fleet. Last year, the country saw the market share of hybrid and electric vehicles surpass 50%.

One in every two registrations in Norway in 2017 will have involved an electric or hybrid vehicle. The share of electric vehicles purchased during the year represents 20.9% of sales, against 31.3% of hybrid vehicles (rechargeable or not). Norway is positioning itself as the most advanced country in this field of cleaner vehicles.

In comparison, France recorded only 5% sales of hybrid or electric vehicles over the entire newly acquired fleet. Norway is thus well on its way to fulfilling its objectives of selling only zero-emission cars by 2025.

To achieve this feat, Norway has introduced particularly heavy taxes on vehicles with thermal engines, while counterbalancing with a softer taxation on clean vehicles. In comparison, electric and hybrid vehicles are thus often more advantageous than their thermal counterparts.
