In 2018, twenty dangerous asteroids will graze the Earth

Last week, a large 5km asteroid passed more than 10 million kilometers from our Earth. And next year will be charged in transit of near-Earth asteroids.

Our colleagues from Sciences et Avenir magazine have identified all known large asteroids that should pass close to our Earth during the year 2018.

This year, we have seen the passage of several asteroids of good size, and sometimes very close to our Earth. This was the case for 2012 TC4, an asteroid quite small (30 meters) but that we came close to passing less than 7000 km from us in October and a next passage is not expected before 2079.

More recently, it was 3200 Phaeton, a pebble 5km in diameter that passed 10 million kilometers last week. More exotic: Oumuamua and its 400 meters in diameter with a cigar shape was "listened" as part of the project Lyra during its passage in November.

During 2018, at least 19 asteroids are known and identified by various organizations.

The year will begin with the passage of 2017 DR109, a rock from 8 to 18 meters which will pass to less than 4 times the distance Earth-Moon on February 24th. Then follow 2017 VR12 March 7 (200 to 400 meters, less than 4 times the distance Earth-Moon), then 2015 DK200 (21 to 45 meters for a passage to 7 times the distance Earth-Moon).

The largest asteroid will be 2003 SD220 with its size between 920 and 2100 meters and a passage to 7.5 times the distance Earth-Moon, it should visit us on December 22. Complete infographic is to find at this address.
