iPhone: facial recognition on the dorsal photo sensor is for 2019, and with laser!

Thec introduces a TrueDepth sensor on the front allowing Face ID facial recognition. A similar sensor on the rear photo sensor would be planned for 2019 but with a technology using a laser instead of an infrared beam.

This year, iPhone X swaps Touch ID fingerprinting for Face ID face recognition using a TrueDepth module installed in the front panel that can map a face with multiple infrared beams.

This technology should be in the iPad Pro tablet of 2018 as well as the entire iPhone range next year. In terms of placing this module also on the rear photo sensor, various rumors have evoked its presence on future models, without guarantees however.

Bloomberg says that this possibility is seriously considered and could materialize from 2019, to supplement the possibilities related to the augmented reality allowed by this type of sensor.

But this integration should use a technology other than infrared beam return analysis to draw a map of the face. The new approach would rely this time on laser beams whose return is measured to reconstruct a 3D model.

The iPhone 2019 should therefore have two 3D modules, one at the front with the TrueDepth system and the use of infrared beams, and the other at the back using laser beams.

Apple is reported to have begun discussing with laser module suppliers such as Infineon, Sony, STMicroelectronics and Panasonic. Bloomberg sources suggest, however, that integration will depend on the success of prototype testing.

All this should help strengthen the capabilities of iPhone in augmented reality, and in particular to strengthen the user experience by making virtual animations ever more realistic and in keeping with the immediate environment.

What for example to generate shadow effects consistent with the ambient light and the display of virtual objects according to the real objects of the decor, with the ultimate idea of being able to make one indistinguishable from the other.
