Mercedes-Benz EQA concept: the future of the compact

After the electric SUV Concept EQ unveiled in Paris last year, Mercedes-Benz announces for the Frankfurt fair the Concept EQA turned towards the compact segment.

The manufacturer Mercedes is part of the market players starting to unveil their all-electric concepts while waiting for the first production vehicles in a few years.

After the electric SUV Concept EQ announced for the Paris Motor Show in September 2016, it is now the segment of the compact that is explored with the EQA Concept presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The EQ range will benefit from a modular platform that will create different types of electric vehicles based on the same base, with chassis combining aluminum, steel and carbon fiber.

Generation EQ wants to express these values and propose a mix of SUV and sedan in its forms, with exterior design elements evoking its electric dimension and a clean cockpit offering a large 24 "screen (53 x 11 cm) modular for the driver.

The interactions are via touch panels, eliminating the buttons and mechanical elements of traditional dashboards, notably via tactile OLED displays housed in the steering wheel's branches and displaying the icons of the different functionalities, renewing the principle of steering wheel controls.

The Mercedes Generation EQ benefits from a all-wheel drive and two electric motors on the front / rear axles, the batteries (produced by the Accumotive subsidiary and 70 kWh capacity) being housed under the floor. The power output is 300 kW and allows an acceleration of 0-100 km / h in less than 5 seconds. The manufacturer also promises a good autonomy of 500 kilometers in cycle NEDC (around 400 kilometers in real use), with fast recharging CCS.

Mercedes does not forget advanced driving assistance (ADAS) by incorporating Here mapping with topological indications to automatically adapt the speed and type of driving. The vehicle, by embarking different sensors, also prepares the way for autonomous vehicles and is capable of communication C2X (Car to Everything, for communication between vehicles, with infrastructures and with remote servers).

Of course, it remains to be seen what will remain of all its innovations in the first vehicles of series of the range Mercedes EQ ...
