Firefox version 55. What's new?

The Firefox browser comes in a new version 55. The support of WebVR on Windows, performances still on the rise, and some other novelties.

Mozilla Mozilla 54 has boosted the multiprocess through activation of several processes for content, in addition to the main Firefox process. Milling 55 is now available in a stable version and gives users greater control to take advantage of this multi-process architecture.

In the options and on the General tab, performance parameters inform that, by default, they are adapted to the configuration of the device. However, it is now possible to simply modify and increase the desired number of processes for the content. In practice, this may be of interest for a configuration with more than 8 GB of RAM, bearing in mind that there will be a growing impact on memory consumption.

It should be noted that the presence of certain extensions can block the activation of the multiprocess. In terms of extensions, a label warns the manager if they are obsolete. This obsolescence is to be related to the WebExtensions that will be the only ones to run from Firefox 57 in November.

For performance and as part of the Quantum Flow project, starting Firefox when restoring a session with many tabs needs to be much faster than before.

On Windows for now, Firefox 55 is announced with support for the new WebVR standard, and with headsets like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. To try virtual reality from the web browser, experiences are offered on vr.mozilla.org. Mozilla has also concocted this video presentation (the introduction and music with a retro side make their little effect ...):

The address bar has been upgraded with search suggestions and integration of search engines accessible in one click at the bottom (Google, Yahoo, Bing, Amazon, DuckDuckGo or Wikipedia). The list of engines can be modified in the search options. In addition, priority is given to the HTTPS version of sites where possible.

In terms of personalization, it should be noted that the side panel for bookmarks, history and synchronized tabs can be moved to the right of the screen and is thus not only left-handed.

Following the announcement of the end of Flash Player life, Firefox switches to the "Click to Activate" default for this plugin and for the relevant pages. Deployment of this measure is proceeding gradually in August and September.

Firefox 55 is available for download for Windows, MacOS and Linux, and later for Android. On Windows, the new installations of Firefox (with the default installer) will be done in 64 bits on the appropriate systems (at least 2 GB of RAM). Existing installations will be migrated in 64 bits with Firefox 56.
