On the occasion of the conference Build 2017, Microsoft says a little more about its initiative Windows 10 on ARM processors, the first equipped devices being expected at the end of the year.
Microsoft has not completely abandoned its intention to carry Windows on ARM processors, after the failure of Windows RT, victim among other things of the lack of applications available for this platform.
And it is precisely by not wanting to commit the same mistake as the Redmond group unveiled Windows 10 on ARM with an x86 emulation last December. Again, it's about bringing the environment to machines equipped with ARM processors, but, as it was recalled during the conference Build, with an extended compatibility allowing a wide use of the applications.
Unlike Windows 10 S, which can only operate applications in the Windows Store, Windows 10 on ARM will be able to run Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications, Win32 applications in the Windows Store, and external Win32 applications.
And if it is indeed an x86 emulation, less efficient than a native operation, Microsoft ensures that the performances will remain very close to those of the native applications, at least for the more common and not too resource-intensive.
The idea here is to be able to offer a Windows 10 platform with similar performance regardless of the type of processor and its supplier, which remains an important marketing point for the success of Windows 10 beyond x86 processors.
The Qualcomm group has already confirmed the arrival of the first devices under Windows 10 on ARM operating SoC SnapDragon 835 for the end of the year, which should allow Microsoft to offer tablets 2 in 1 and convertible under Windows 10 and integrating 4G cellular modems, for ever more mobility and productivity.
