CES 2018: a show that influences consumers ... in the medium term

While the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has just closed its doors, we were able to discover some trends that will develop during this year and the following.

According to a study by the Idealo price comparator, the CES influences the consumer, but not necessarily in the short term.

Thus, if some technologies unveiled this year win the votes of the public, they will be truly adopted in a few years.

Idealo returns to a few technologies and their adoption by the French. According to a study, 47% of French people are interested in smartwatches, followed by 41% by drones. These two technologies were presented several years ago and are now part of our daily lives.

For other newer or less accessible technologies, there is still a long way to go. In third place in the ranking, we find the helmets of virtual reality with 7% of French saying they are interested, followed by 1% for smart personal assistants (something that we have seen with the smart speaker Google Home that has recently exceeded 6 million sales). Other technologies do not take off the 1% interest: connected keychains, 3D printer, connected home, connected health, TV QLED ... These areas are still too recent or not yet sufficiently mature or accessible to concern the biggest number.

Nevertheless, the CES gives trends and influences the consumer in the long run. In 2017, the most popular technologies were virtual reality, PDAs and Q-LED TVs. Technologies that maintain a significant demand from consumers, but which face sales prices sometimes too high for the first generations of product.

In addition, the products presented at CES remain mainly products that require several months of pre-marketing tweaking, which also explains the delays between their presentation and their adoption by the general public.
