Google Safe Browsing protects Google's 3 billion devices worldwide.
Google's secure navigation service is protecting more than 3 billion devices globally, according to new published figures. For Safe Browsing, it's two billion more devices compared to a score last year.
When browsing, Safe Browsing warns users of attempts to access dangerous sites or download malicious files. Developers are also alerted when their sites are compromised.
With free and public availability (API) for publishers and developers, this protection is not just about Google products, which explains the astronomical figure of 3 billion.
Additionally, a Safe Browsing client is part of Google Play Services, including a default activation for Chrome on Android. Since iOS 10, Safari also uses Safe Browsing.
"We send only the most protective information to a given device, and we make sure that this data is compressed as much as possible," Google writes.
Safe Browsing relies on machine learning to detect different types of threats. Evolutions are planned, but that's the mystery about it for now.
