Quantum: Eutelsat will be equipped with two additional reprogrammable satellites

Eutelsat will order two new copies of its Quantum reprogrammable satellite, which has been seduced by the industry's concept and flexibility.

Quantum satellites represent a new class of remotely reprogrammable satellites for different missions, with the possibility to change orientation and frequencies of use.

This family was announced by Eutelsat in 2015, with the project to launch by 2018/2019 a first satellite in geostationary orbit over the Atlantic Ocean to cover the Americas and Europe.

The idea of the reprogrammable satellite, which could cover different areas and different beams, seems to have convinced the industry since Eutelsat intends to order the construction of at least two other Quantum satellites, the first being built by Airbus Defense & Space.

Having a constellation of three satellites would make it possible to ensure a broad coverage of the surface of the globe and the second satellite Quantum could thus be in charge to cover Asia.

Unlike standard satellites, this family of satellites can see its coverage and beam power characteristics modulated according to the needs of the diffusers, indicates SpaceNews site.

The first Quantum satellite will thus have 8 descending beams of 1 GHz that can concentrate on a surface of 600 km in diameter or cover one third of the surface of the globe with a more diffuse power.

The next two Quantum satellites from Eutelsat could thus be launched around 2020 and 2021, for civil uses in Ku-band (other bands could be supported) and military, part of the design having military origins becoming functionalities commercial.

In particular, satellites are capable of locating a source of interference or interference of the signal with an accuracy of 20 kilometers, interrupting the signal around these sources or switching to other frequencies than those blocked in the area concerned.
