YouTube: a new paid music service? It's already pretty confusing ...

Under the leadership of YouTube, a new attempt by Google for a music service could emerge in the first quarter of 2018.

Because music is a popular genre on YouTube, music majors are constantly beating up on Google's service for more spinoffs. Initiatives have already been taken, although it is rather rough. Google's strategy is far from clear.

With Google Play Music, Google already has a subscription music streaming service. Another attempt came under the YouTube brand with Music Key, whose field was later expanded beyond just music content into YouTube Red.

YouTube Red only affects a handful of countries, for example not France. It is a YouTube with paid subscription and without advertising which gives access to original contents. In addition, YouTube Red and Google Play Music subscriptions are linked.

There is also the YouTube Music app (still for some countries) where YouTube Red subscribers have access to background playback and download for offline music listening.

It's not over ... According to Bloomberg, YouTube will launch a new subscription music service next March. For this pay service, Warner Music has already signed an agreement, and discussions would take place with Sony Music, Universal Music and the consortium of independent labels Merlin.

Internally, the new service would be codenamed Remix. It would be a mix between on-demand music and YouTube content like video clips.
