Twitter explains this choice by the desire to make its network more accessible, easier and faster for everyone. It was sometimes difficult to keep messages within the imposed limit. A test was organized in September with a selection of users. The character limit also does not affect everyone in the same way, especially in terms of languages. In a recent study, Twitter said that 9% of messages in English arrived at the limit of 140 characters, against 7% in French, in all cases, it requires users to review their messages and waste time.
With this new limit, Twitter hopes to recover new users and make its current fleet more active.
