Google: Project Loon balloons in Puerto Rico connect 100,000 people to the Internet

After hurricanes hit Puerto Rico in October, Google got permission to deploy the atmospheric balloons of its Project Loon. Since then, 100,000 people have taken advantage of it to access the Internet.

When terrestrial telecommunication networks are insufficient or devastated by a natural disaster, it may be useful to be able to mobilize a system to quickly bring back access to communications and the Internet.

Several solutions exist, at different stages of maturation. At Google, we use balloons in the upper atmosphere and can cover a defined area.

Hurricanes ravaging Puerto Rico have been a valuable opportunity to test the life-size Project Loon service. Deployment authorizations were obtained in early October and agreements were made with US operators to temporarily operate their band 8 frequencies.

Since then, Google has announced that 100,000 people in Puerto Rico have access to the 4G LTE mobile network of operators T-Mobile and AT & T thus formed, just three weeks after the start of commissioning.

The communications provided correspond to a "basic" service, with the exchange of SMS, email and limited access to the Internet, and without voice service, but they still allow to communicate within the island and with the outside .
