On 19 April, asteroid 2014 JO25 continued its course as planned and approached the Earth some 1.75 million kilometers from our planet.
NASA had warned of its passage for several days already: 2014 JO25 approached our Earth this April 19 passing to only 1.75 million kilometers. If the distance seems important, it does not represent much on the cosmic scale and given the forces involved.
The asteroid passed close enough for observations to be made to the simple telescope. We were able to make interesting discoveries, notably on the size of the asteroid.
Its size was estimated to be 600 meters in diameter, but eventually the GoldStone Solar System Radar of NASA revealed that it was an asteroid consisting of two modules welded at one point. The largest body alone measured 620 meters wide, for a total diameter of the star of 1.3 kilometers, more than double the estimated size.
It was 10 years ago that such a star had not passed so close to the Earth, the most recent being Toutatis, an asteroid measuring between 2.4 km and 4.6 km wide that has passed four lunar distances of We are in 2004.
Next comparable event: 2027 with the passage of 1999 AN10, an asteroid of 800 m wide which will pass even closer to us: 380 000 km approximately.
